The Amazing FA Cup

By Joseph Schacter

This is truly my favorite time of the sports year. Not because of the beginnings of NFL preseason. Not because of my fantasy football drafts. Not because of the MLB pennant race that's heating up, and not because of the upcoming college sports season. It's all because of a little known event, beloved in England.

This is the FA Cup, a one of a kind tournament, the likes of which can't be compared to anything that takes place in the US. This is a massive tournament that allows soccer teams of all sizes to compete equally against one another for a chance at glory.

Just how big is this tournament? It's huge. 762 unique football teams have a chance to compete against one another, in a single elimination format that spans 14 rounds. Can you think of any other tournament like this that goes as deep as 14 rounds? I can't.

Every tournament, we witness massive upsets that stun the football world. Imagine the LA Lakers losing to a college basketball team, or the Pittsburgh Steelers losing to some kind of high school football team. As crazy as it sounds, this stuff legitimately happens, and the story lines are unparalleled anywhere else.

This is where legends are made. Take the Cup from 20 years ago, where Sutton United ousted Coventry City, a premier team. Sutton United wasn't even a member of a league, akin to an amateur recreational team. Then there's the 1975 contest, where amateur team Wimbledon FC ousted premier team Burnley and then went so far as a draw with the defending champs Lees in the third round.

The unpredictability, as shown in just some of the examples above, is what makes it so special. The fact that a team such as Chelsea traveled to Coventry City last year makes the event special. Could you imagine the Packers traveling to play an Arena Football League team? Literally every team has a chance, if they keep winning, to get a huge game like that at home. Once the teams take the field, anything can happen.

The best thing I can compare it to on an American level is March Madness, only over 10 times the size. Think about the way that the 16 seeds get a chance to play behemoths like UNC, and how exciting it is for them. This brings it all to a completely new level. The possibilities are endless.

To make it even better, this tournament lasts for 10 months per year. Everyone loves March Madness, and expresses their sadness once the two weeks end. This can't even compare when you look at the length. Watch this wonderful event if you possibly can, you won't regret it.

Sampling Synthesizers - Their History And Growth

By Tim Benedict

A synthesizer is an instrument that can generate just about any kind of sound which makes it quite easy for a musician to create new, exciting music. Since its invention, the synthesizer has been a boon for musicians and development over the years has led to more advanced and sophisticated models. The sampling synthesizer is one such model.

A sampling synthesizer is a type of synthesizer that stores sound samples in RAM and then plays each sound back based on how an instrument is configured. Unlike a general synthesizer, it does not produce sounds from scratch. The sampling synthesizer first starts with sounds being recorded from multiple recordings or with samples of different natural or instrumental sounds.

A sampling synthesizer (or sample based synthesizer) works differently from the additive or subtractive synthesis used in other synthesizers. subtractive synthesizers filter square or sawtooth waves to generate their sounds. Additive synthesizers assemble their sounds by adding together different sine waves.

The effectiveness of a sampling synthesizer is dependent upon the volume of the sample sounds it has since it uses these sound samples to reproduce sounds of natural instruments. The high price of computer memory greatly limited the number of sounds that a sampling synthesizer held when it was first developed, but over the years, as memory chips have become less and less expensive, the amount of sounds samples increased so that now there is much greater flexibility and quality to the instrument.

One of the advantages of a sampled synthesizer is that it requires less processing power than a conventional synthesizer. This is due to the fact that the sampler only needs to reproduce its stored samples while a conventional synthesizer must calculate its notes in real time.

The sampling synthesizer has clear benefits over analog synths as well. Whereas an analog model must have a larger chip set in order to produce multiple waveforms at once, the sampling synthesizer does not. Thus, the polyphonic quality tends to be significantly greater in the sampling synthesizer.

When the sampling synthesizer was first developed, the price of memory and processing power made it very expensive. Improving technology enabled the introduction of comparatively affordable samplers like the Roland D50 and the Korg M1 in the late eighties. The Korg M1 also introduced the music workstation concept.

An example of early sample based synthesis is found on Stevie Wonders album "Secret Life of Plants" recorded in 1976. He used the synthesizer to make melodies from recorded natural sounds. In the tune "the first garden", Wonder used sampled bird chirps as the lead instrument in the song.

What is a Timeshare?

By Larry Evans

Way back, people who have real properties were considered rich. A mans place in the society is determined by how many hectares of land he owns. People of royal descent and the big business men had castles, villas, vacation homes, and farm lands while those who belong to the lowest class in a society did not have any amount of land. This scenario is still very much alive today. A mans riches is gauged by the number of homes and condominiums he has.

Back then, only those who had the money can afford to purchase a house. Nowadays, the cost of top quality housing is cheaper than the yesteryears making a lot of us acquire our very own properties. Now there are property developers who are building low-cost, top quality housing perfect for the entire family. Loans and financial programs abound for anyone who wants to have a house under his name.

There are those who prefer to have a two-bedroom house or a cottage right at the heart of a popular tourist destination to let them be at the center of all fun filled activities. There are varied designs and any location is possible. With this modern-day trend, timesharing gained its foothold to globetrotters and adventure seekers. Timeshare is a method where people can use the home of another person for certain period of time.

This method lowers maintenance costs for the owner would not incur costs in maintaining the property while he is away. The other owner does this in his behalf. Maintenance costs may include household repairs and fees agreed by neighborhood associations where the property belongs.

Many people prefer timeshare for it is easy to do and it is cost effective at the same time. The key to a worry-free timeshare is to draft a good contract and to find a responsible co-owner. There are a lot of resources in the Web that can help you do this, be sure to check them out.
