Washington Offense In A State Of Flux

The Washington Redskins are a mess right now. Head coach Jim Zorn has a tenuous hold on his job at best and has recently been stripped of his offensive play calling duties. Management installed newly hired 'offensive consultant' Sherman Lewis as the new offensive play caller and the team has set up an awkward arrangement for him to get the plays to the quarterbacks. For that reason, starting QB Jason Campbell has some serious misgivings about the efficacy of the setup.

Lewis has only been out of retirement and with the team for two weeks, and has spent this week trying to ingest a crash course on the Redskins' offensive schemes. While he was learning on the job, head coach Zorn was trying to put the best spin possible on what can only be seen as a de facto demotion and vote of 'no confidence':

"I need to have composure. I need to understand what the reality of the situation is, and I think our players expect me to rise up. We expect them to play under adverse conditions. We expect them to risk it all. ... I'm conscious of what's going on. I'm not naive about what's going on, and yet I have to just hold back on any feelings and make the decisions."

Quarterback Campbell is more concerned about the convoluted system of getting plays from Lewis to him:

"There'll probably be a couple of plays I have in my head just in case if some reason it doesn't get in on time."

Here's how things are supposed to work-Lewis will sit in the coaches' box above the field and read the plays off a sheet. While Lewis has years of experience working in the so called 'West Coast Offense', Zorn left doubt that he really knows what he's doing at this point stressing that Lewis "doesn't know the protections" and "doesn't know the blitz schemes." Nevertheless, he'll be running the offense when the Redskins take on Philadelphia this Monday night.

Once Lewis figures out what to call, that's when it really gets tricky. He'll relay the plays via headset not to Zorn but to offensive coordinator Sherman Smith. Smith will then inform the quarterback what to run. Zorn is left in the role of a passive bystander on offense, though he will listen in to the playcalling on his headset.

Backup quarterback Todd Collins also shared his concern with the new arrangement:

"It is unsettling. I've never gone through this before. I've never had a play caller get changed in the middle of the season."

Lewis didn't exactly evoke a lot of confidence upon his hiring, where he revealed that he'd been calling bingo games at a seniors' center to kill time since his retirement in 2004. Still, Collins gave him a guarded vote of confidence;

"I know he's been studying last year's game against the Eagles and seems to have a pretty good idea how he wants to call the game this week. It's the same plays. He might coach them a little differently or highlight some different areas, but the offense hasn't gone under an overhaul or anything like that."

The Redskins haven't scored more than 17 points in a game this season, so maybe the thinking is that things can't get any worse.

As our society becomes growingly beholden to computers and networks, we simultaneously inevitably become increasingly more reliant upon the well trained IT professionals, who ensure the systems function properly.

'Exam Guarantees' are often bundled with training offers - they always involve paying for the exam fees up-front, before you've even made a start on the course. Before you get carried away with guaranteed exams, be aware of the facts:

In this day and age, we are a little more 'marketing-savvy' - and most of us grasp that it is something we're paying for - it's not because they're so generous they want to give something away!

For those who want to get a first time pass, then you should pay for each exam as you go, focus on it intently and be ready for the task.

Don't you think it's more sensible to find the best exam deal or offer when you're ready, instead of paying a premium to a training course provider, and also to sit exams more locally - instead of miles away at the college's beck and call?

Including money in your training package for examination fees (and if you're financing your study there'll be interest on that) is insane. Why fill a company's coffers with your money simply to help their cash-flow! Some will be pinning their hopes on the fact that you won't get round to taking them - but they won't refund the cash.

The majority of companies will insist that you take mock exams first and not allow you to re-take an exam until you've completely proven that you're likely to pass - making an 'exam guarantee' just about worthless.

On average, exams cost 112 pounds or thereabouts in the last 12 months when taken at Prometric or VUE centres around the United Kingdom. So don't be talked into shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds more for 'Exam Guarantees', when common sense dictates that the responsible approach is study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams.

A so-called advisor who doesn't question you thoroughly - it's likely they're actually nothing more than a salesman. If they're pushing towards a particular product before getting to know your background and current experience level, then you know it's true.

Don't forget, if you've had any relevant accreditation or direct-experience, then you may be able to commence studying further along than a trainee with no history to speak of.

If you're a student commencing IT study from scratch, it can be useful to ease in gradually, kicking off with some basic user skills first. Usually this is packaged with most training packages.

It's clear nowadays: There really is very little evidence of individual job security now; there can only be industry or sector security - companies can just fire a solitary member of staff whenever it suits the company's business needs.

We can however hit upon market-level security, by searching for areas in high demand, together with a lack of qualified workers.

The computer industry skills shortfall around the country falls in at approx 26 percent, as shown by the most recent e-Skills study. Essentially, we only have the national capacity to fill 3 out of each 4 job positions in the computer industry.

Appropriately qualified and commercially grounded new employees are thus at a total premium, and it's estimated to remain so for many years longer.

Without a doubt, this really is such a perfect time for retraining into the IT industry.

Be careful that the exams you're working towards will be recognised by employers and are up-to-date. The 'in-house' certifications provided by many companies are not normally useful in gaining employment.

Unless your qualification is issued by a major player like Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe, then chances are it won't be commercially viable - because no-one will recognise it.

Never make the mistake of compromise when you're looking for the right support service. Most would-be IT professionals that can't get going properly, just need the right support system.

We can guess that you've always enjoyed practical work - the 'hands-on' person. If you're anything like us, the world of book-reading and classrooms is something you'll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but it doesn't suit your way of doing things. Consider interactive, multimedia study if books just don't do it for you.

The latest home-based training features easy-to-use DVD or CD ROM's. By watching and listening to instructors on video tutorials you'll absorb the modules, one by one, via the demonstrations and explanations. Any company that you're considering should willingly take you through some simple examples of their courseware. You're looking for evidence of tutorial videos and demonstrations and interactive areas to practice in.

If your advisor doesn't question you thoroughly - it's likely they're actually nothing more than a salesman. If they wade straight in with a specific product before understanding your background and whether you have any commercial experience, then it's very likely to be the case.

If you've got a strong background, or perhaps a bit of work-based experience (maybe some existing accreditation?) then it's more than likely your starting level will be different from someone with no background whatsoever.

Of course: a training course or an accreditation is not the ultimate goal; a job you're training for is. A lot of colleges seem to over-emphasise the qualification itself.

It's possible, in many cases, to get a great deal of enjoyment from a year of study and then find yourself trapped for decades in something completely unrewarding, entirely because you stumbled into it without the correct research when you should've - at the outset.

Never let your focus stray from where you want to go, and formulate your training based on that - not the other way round. Stay focused on the end-goal - making sure you're training for something you'll enjoy for years to come.

Talk to an experienced industry professional who has a background in the industry you're considering, and who'll explain to you a detailed run-down of what to expect in that role. Getting to the bottom of all this before commencement of any training path will prevent a lot of wasted time and effort.

Also, you should find out how the chords are constructed and how they interact with each other.

Although finger picking might seem too advanced for a beginners course, you should learn it too. It also might seem like it would be better with a different type of music. Finger picking is a valuable technique to pick up. Acquire some dexterity and learn to use both hands. Even if you never use a technique like finger picking before, it is better to know it than not to know.

Tuning and knowing how each chord works with each key are also important skills to master during your guitar for beginners course. You'll start off using open tuning and then try barring, which is pressing down the strings across the fret and completing the chord using the rest of your fingers.

You'll learn scales, too - they're the basis of almost all guitar playing out there. Once you have a good grasp on your scales, your ability to progress will increase greatly.

Maybe you have the the urge to jump right in when you want to learn guitar but I advise you not to. Instead if you want to be a truly skilled guitar player, get a good grounding in the basics first. Then when you get to the advanced techniques, you will be able to accomplish a lot more. Everyone who want to be an expert in playing guitar need to start with the basics. They may look impressive now but they also started as beginners learning the basics.

It can be a little overwhelming at first when you started playing guitar. But as long as you practice hard and focus, you will be an expert in no time.

Roller Girls Revive A Moribund Sport

Roller Derby was never really a big deal in the US, but has been around forever and was a staple of the early days of television. It was similar in its promotional format to its better known "sports entertainment" cousin, professional wrestling. It was frequently seen in the same bad timeslots on the same low powered UHF TV stations, and it was run by the same loose confederation of promoters and businessmen that characterized the regional territory era of pro wrestling. That's where the similarity to wrestling ends--it's storylines made pro wrestling angles look like high drama. While there is a definite history to the sport--great teams like the LA T-Birds and Bay Bombers, and legendary skaters like Ann Calvello it never really stuck in the public consciousness like the pre-Hulk Hogan era of pro wrestling.

New era roller derby reached a national audience through the A&E reality series Roller Girls. It featured a local, all-girl roller derby league in Austin, Texas and followed the lives of the players on and off the track. While the show was oddly engaging, it was the first clue that many had that such a league existed in the first place. A sport that was never taken seriously to begin with and that was really living on borrowed time since the'60's before fading into the lowest level of obscurity had been rediscovered and embraced by an eclectic group of young women. They had kept the same essential format, thrown in a healthy dose of burlesque camp and Varga pin-up inspired glamour and made it into their own vibrant subculture. They changed some of the nomenclature and competitive format--in lieu of regularly scheduled games they renamed the competitions "bouts" a la MMA or boxing. The result was a compelling mixture of glamour, toughness and athleticism driven by a healthy dose of punk rock "do it yourself" mentality.

Today, roller derby is a full blown worldwide phenomenon. There are hundreds of local roller derby leagues not only in the United States, but Canada, Australia and Europe. Most of the local groups similarly play up the campy retro pin-up/hot rod iconography and everyone involved sure looks like they're having a good time. Between teams there's a vibe of good natured competitiveness and camaraderie. In the US, these groups exist under the auspices of a national organization called the Womens Flat Track Derby Association. Las Vegas has the 'Sin City Roller Girls', Portland, Oregon the 'Rose City Rollers" and Seattle the 'Rat City Rollers'. There are now groups in not only the larger and traditionally "hipper" cities but also smaller communities such as Birmingham, Alabama and Omaha, Nebraska.

This organic rebirth and growth of roller derby is a result of young women taking what essentially was TV time filler and made it into their own distaff 'action sport'. The roller derby circa 2009 is a matriarchal success story. No one is in it for the money, as these local groups are typically run as non-profit organization. The women involved have recreated this sport, and run it, promote it and compete in it on their own terms.

The new generation rollergirls also pay homage to their sports' pioneers. Many of the individual group websites have sections devoted to the history of roller derby, and the late Ann Calvello--regarded as the Queen of the original Roller Derby--is revered as something of a patron saint. The Texas Rollergirl group featured in the A&E series has renamed their championship the Calvello Cup.

Understand Your Character

Spend some time to discover everything about your character. Set your talents to either PvP or PvE. You must also know your place in a group (healer, tank, dps). With that, you will then know what gear to get.

Lots of Quests

Go and do lot of quests right away. You can level up fast and save time. You can also go and do raid quests. They can give you more experience and gold and some good gear. When you do quests, do it in a specific area

Quest that are part of chain quests are useful because they give you more experience.

Grind

Well grinding takes some time but if do a quest that needs a item that drops from a mob grid as hell, you will get extra experience when finish the quest. Make sure you grind for mobs that are not 2-3 levels below you or 3-4 levels above you. After all you don't want to get killed.

Don't waste time gathering gear

Now the point is to level up faster not. Do not waste time getting that gear for your level. In World of Warcraft you should be worrying about gear at the few highest levels. Even though your gear will be a little weak it should be enough to defeat all those mobs.

Swedish Heavyweight Champ Ingemar Johansson In Profile

Former heavyweight champ Ingemar Johannson died in a Swedish nursing home in January 2009 at the age of 76. He'd lived in the nursing home in his hometown of Kungsbacka since the mid'90's when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia. No official cause of death was given, but Johannson had suffered a serious bout with pneumonia just prior to his death.

Johannson became a worldwide fistic superstar when he knocked out Floyd Patterson in the third round of their June'59 fight to become heavyweight champion of the world. At the time, he was only the 5th champ to be born outside of the United States. He wasn't given much of a chance going into the fight due to his lax training and frequent partying during the weeks before the bout.

His performance against the champ that night in Yankee Stadium shocked the boxing world"after a tentative first two rounds, Johannson floored Patterson with a short right early in the third. The champ never recovered and with no three knockdown rule in effect was knocked down a total of seven times before referee Ruby Goldstein called a halt to the proceedings and awarded the Swede the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world.

Johannson would hold the title for just under a year before he lost it back to Patterson in a rematch at the Polo Grounds in New York City. Patterson was the aggressor from the opening bell, and would eventually regain his title as he knocked Johannson out cold in the fifth round with a looping left hook. Johannson went down like he got shot, and took a ten count staring up at the lights with his leg twitching and blood dribbling out of his mouth. In the immediate aftermath of his victory, Patterson displayed the class of a champion as he was more concerned about Johanssons well being than celebrating his win. Patterson sat on the canvas with his fallen opponent cradling his head as medical personnel tended to Johannson. Floyd Patterson had just become the first man to regain the undisputed heavyweight championship, but his thoughts were with the man hed taken the title from.

The two men would fight for a third time nine months later in Miami Beach, Florida. Though Johannson appeared to be out of shape entering the battle, he fought bravely in an exciting slugfest that saw both men taste the canvas at various points in the bout. The first round was particularly epic, with Patterson down twice and Johannson once. Soon after, however, it became apparent that Johannson knew an early assault was his only real chance at victory. The superior conditioning of Patterson took over, and he put his opponent away for good in the 6th round. Johannson would fight four more times , posting victories in Sweden before retiring from the ring in'63.

Not surprising given the mutual respect shown during their heavyweight championship trilogy, Patterson and Johannson remained close lifelong friends and would travel to visit each other every year until the American champion died in 2006. While it is commonplace today for former in-ring adversaries to become close personal friends, it was something of an anomaly in the'60s. Johannson made a number of film appearances in Sweden, and spent time in South Florida every year. He remained in good health well into his sixties, running in marathons yearly until his physical ailments took their toll.

Johannson was married and divorced twice, and is survived by five children. Ingemar Johannson enjoyed rock star like status in Sweden during his title reign, and will be remembered by the international fight community for his role in helping fuel the worldwide interest in the sweet science.
