Tips For Getting Good Camera Shots

I grew up in a family of photographers. My grandfather used to love to tell the story of how he made his first pinhole camera, and how he stole developing paper from one of the merchants at the Sunday market, and how the owner called after him Ill box your ears in, young lad, Ill box your ears in. I spent hours in my youth, posing for still photographs in the garden, with my brother and sister. It was my sister that inherited his passion and went on to graduate from a photography diploma course, having successfully photographed over 100 door knobs in black and white. Take a nature hike with her and shell stop to photograph unusual plants (she also likes to steal clippings from peoples gardens and replant them!).

Here are a few tips of how to take or appreciate photographs:

1: Follow the natural eye movement from the bottom left corner to the top right corner. This ones from my grandfather, who at my sisters request wrote a how-to guide to take a good picture, for my sister, in his painstakingly meticulous hand-writing. The other day, in the doctors waiting room I tested the reverse, and concluded that I seldom look right-to-left. The idea is to put the focus of attention in the top right-hand corner.

2: Ask permission afterward. About a year ago, I went into a hole-in-the-wall bar/cafe with Richard, a photographer friend of mine, who proceeded to show me a stack of, literally hundreds, of photos, for a business project in mind. He then got out his camera and took the bartenders photo. The bartender was actually not at all pleased with this, and had to be placated. My best people pictures have been taken when the persons not aware that Im about to take their picture. Its more natural, and a lot more fun.

3: Take a cerebral snapshot first. Seasoned globe-trotter and travel writer, Paul Theroux, wrote how once he was in Italy and he saw a dozen white doves spill out of the eaves of a cathedral, but he didn't have a camera with him to capture the moment. He invites people with cameras to try capture the picture in their mind, and to see if its story-worthy. If you can imagine taking out the snapshot and talking animatedly with friends or other photographers about what you managed to capture, then you've got something.

I may not have inherited my grandfathers passion for taking pictures, but I do like the eye for colored doors of quaint town cottages, and for a face of someone who's lived an interesting life.

Upload all the pics to your site and send the emails. You will then make a lot more money than the 20% discount it cost you because then 30 or 40 people will be also buying your pics at $20 or more a shot straight from your site. You can also charge a higher price for high resolution pics.

The key is to just find a corner of the market where you can take the pics and then sell them easily online.

Dog shows, fashion shows, horse shows, car shows, livestock competitions, rock shows, - the list goes on. Keep your eye out in the events section of your local paper to see what is happening. With a slight tweaking of the color spectrum, Blu-ray has rendered conventional DVD players as hard to watch as VHS. Hard to believe, but true.

The blue laser of the Blu-ray technology renders HD quality films and sound, while condensing all that data more efficiently on the disc. This means two and three disc boxed sets will be far more rare -- either that or studios will release even more bonus materials. Perhaps they will feature every facet of the films production, from pitch to screen, including actor auditions.

A lauded selling point is the alleged durability of the Blu-ray disc. While a typical CD disc can still provide decent sound quality even when scratched, a scratched DVD disc seldom performs well. The tiniest scratch can derail and entire film. The Blu-ray, disc, allegedly, is far more durable and even enjoys a buffering layer to protect the data. Whether or not this stands up to public scrutiny, it does makes for an attractive bullet point on the proverbial PowerPoint presentation that is mass marketing.

The fact that new technological breakthroughs are marketed in terms of revolutions is telling. Each new device requires that it wrap itself in something as violent and encompassing as a revolution to ensure we feel the urgency. What's the rush? Why, the corporate bottom-line of course. Hurry and buy before -- well, before what? If the technology is worthwhile, it should stay on the market. Given the impressive qualities of Blu-ray technology, it should be well entrenched for any and all takers.

The Ultimate Street Fighter: Kimbo Slice

The UFC has been maligned in the past year or two for their heavyweight division and to be sure there's many top heavyweights fighting elsewhere. The most significant of these competitors is the undisputed best heavyweight MMA fighter on the planet, Fedor Emelianenko and the man considered by most to be #2, Josh Barnett. While the UFC might not have the best heavyweight fighter in the sport, they may soon have the most famous. Dana White announced recently that Kimbo Slice will be a contestant on season 10 of the UFCs MMA reality show The Ultimate Fighter. A good performance there could see him get a shot at fighting for the promotion.

In the past, Dana White has dismissed Slice and suggested that the only way hed ever fight in the UFC is by winning The Ultimate Fighter. Kimbo will get the opportunity to do just that and could deliver the highest rated season in series history. For Kimbo (real name Kevin Ferguson) it is yet another strange twist in his bizarre career as a professional fighter. Slice first made his name fighting in non-sanctioned street fights to supplement his income as a bodyguard for a Miami based adult film production company. At some point, Kimbos entourage started bringing video cameras to his fights and the footage found its way onto the Internet.

Kimbo quickly became an online cult hero before he officially turned pro as a fighter. He began to train under MMA legend Bas Rutten and made his debut in an exhibition against former heavyweight boxing champ Ray Mercer. Kimbo won a dominating victory, and his meteoric rise to superstardom was underway. Not long after, he signed with EliteXC and they quickly made Kimbo the centerpiece of their promotion. While building a MMA promotion around a fighter with almost no experience likely led to their downfall, at the time Kimbo became a media sensation and Elite XC parlayed his popularity into a prime time network TV deal with CBS.

Kimbo's career was moving along nicely, until a fateful fight on an Elite XC nationally televised CBS card. Kimbos fourth fight was originally scheduled to be against former UFC mainstay Ken Shamrock, but due to a last minute injury he eventually faced substitute Seth Petruzelli. Petruzelli caught Kimbo with a perfectly placed counter right hook and knocked him out. That was the beginning of the end for Elite XC, and the promotion was out of business in a matter of weeks.

Following the demise of Elite XC Kimbo kept a fairly low profile. He made a few appearances in a promotional capacity for the K-1 kickboxing organization in Japan while considering his next career move. About this time, he parted with trainer Bas Rutten who intimated that Kimbo had let his newfound celebrity go to his head. UFC president Dana White would occasionally be asked if hed ever have an interested in Kimbo, which hed dismiss with the offhanded suggestion that the only way hed fight in the UFC was to compete in The Ultimate Fighter reality show.

While its unclear when that off-handed dismissal by White became a viable reality, but regardless of how the deal came together Kimbo will be a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter. Its really a no-lose proposition for the UFC"if Kimbo doesnt do well, they were right all along and if he *does* do well they can make some money with him. In any case, the media coverage and ratings for their MMA reality show will likely be at an all time high.
