Why Do You Need a Studio Flash Strobe Light Kit?

By James E. Tutten

Investing on a studio flash strobe kit is the next probable step for photographers who wish to bring their craft to the next level. Much about photography is how much a person knows about their light source.

Not only are there many brands of flash light kits, but certain types are meant for certain applications. Daylight is often the preferred light, but not always available. That's when you need to know how to really work with your lighting to create the mood and ambiance that you desire.

More dramatic lighting scenes can be done with either a studio flash strobe or a continuous light source. Continuous light sources are cheaper than strobes. However, strobes are more economical in the long run especially that continuous light consumes too much electricity and tends to heat up too fast. For this reason, the bulbs overheat sooner than those of strobe lights.

A basic Studio flash strobe lighting kit would be made up of two strobe lights with their own tall light stands, a shorter light stand, varied reflectors, soft boxes and an umbrella. The shorter light stand is often used for smaller subjects or as a stand for the light source dedicated for the background.

The two strobe lights will be used as the fill light and also the main light of the object or subject. The photographer will need the freedom to direct the light in different manners, in order to add depth to the photo. He'll use the light stands to achieve this effect.

The photographer will use light to achieve the mood that he wants. When taking portraits, it's a distraction to have hard shadows, and soft boxes will soften the light that's directed on the subject. The umbrella and reflectors are also used to direct or control the light in either an outdoor shoot or a studio shoot.

Reflectors and the umbrella may have different materials that can be used for different effects. For instance, gold reflectors are known to be flattering for portraiture because of the rich and warm tones that it adds to the subjects skin.

An aluminum or silver colored reflector is often used to create a surreal atmosphere with the combination of shadow and light. One side of the reflector is usually black, and may be used to totally block out the light coming from the walls or light source, or any other reflective materials being used.

Carry bags are normally included in a studio light kit. You'll be able to store all the components of your studio flash strobe kit in the bag for easy transportation to your next shoot.
