There is no telling the responses you will get from different types of people watching magic being performed; I guess as many differences as there are people, because everyone has their own store of memories and I'm sure that cool magic tricks had a lot of influence on peoples lives, more than they even realize sometimes. Magic makes us feel young, lets us let go of our strictures and really have a good time trying to figure out how the tricks are done, and fills us with child-like pleasure all over again as if we were seeing it for the first time.
The best way to get started with doing magic and the tricks associated with them, is to begin with a trick using a deck of cards. These card tricks can seem amazing to the gullible viewer and can be added to your bag of cool magic tricks to be performed anyplace, anytime because all they require is a deck of cards. Sometimes you need an extra joker or two to pull off a card trick where the participant chooses a card, you hide it back in the deck, then shuffle and bingo----their chosen card magically appears between the two jokers, but most of the time all that is required is a standard deck.
What would a magic show be without a gaggle of kids watching and adding their two cents every time a trick was done. Kids are naturals for magic shows, and no matter how many times you do your repertoire of cool magic tricks, they always want to see more, more, more. Something as easily done as making slime; for the kids is the coolest thing in the world and they not only get to see you create it out of seemingly nothing, but they also get to play with it for hours after you have created it which makes it all the more fun. To make slime, all you need is glue, water and borax powder----that's it. Mix it up, let it sit, and there it is---the finished product in all its gooey glory----and the kids are in seventh heaven.
Remember those days in school of science fairs and experiments and having to come up with something interesting to show in front of the class, or enter into the science fair and contest, and how many times would someone try and make a volcano. Well, there is a neat way to do it that not only makes the kids gasp with amazement when the "lava" pours down the side of the volcano's slope, but also makes you look like Mr. Wizard. This can fall into the category of cool magic tricks, because it is simple to do, and yet very dynamic to pull off. All you need to do is mold some flour and water and add a little detergent inside the molded cone, then pour in the secret ingredients of vinegar and baking soda and voila, you have Mt. Vesuvius going off all over the table or counter in front of you and the kids are whooping with joy. Can't beat basic chemistry for a wonderful bag full of tricks.
If you want to amaze folks and do something a little different as part of your cool magic tricks repertoire, then the Burning Dollar Bill trick is a natural. All you need to pull this off (including a little practice so you get it right) is of course a dollar bill, some alcohol, matches, and some water. You can add a little salt to the mix if you want color in your final performance, but it is not a necessary part of the trick. Because dollar bills are made of a material more like cloth than paper, you can put them in water and they will soak it up (think of all the dollar bills that have gone through the wash accidentally) and the fact that alcohol and a water-soaked item have different flash points is the premise. The bill used for the trick must be damp with water, and then alcohol added so that when a flame is introduced, only the alcohol burns because its flash point is lower than water, and the dollar bill remains unburned when you blow out the flames. Makes for a real crowd pleaser.
As your repertoire of cool magic tricks expands, be sure to include this simple but effective little trick. This one uses matches and creates the impression that a dead, used match will come back to life and light as well as it did the first time it was used. What is needed is indeed a new match, you dip it in some black ink, let dry, and cover with used ashes so it looks like it has been lit and all the pizazz is gone. But, surprise----when you strike it with a little abracadabra action, the "used" match springs to life and flames just perfectly. Just don't stand too close to the audience when you do this one so they can't see the tampering done to the match.
Every magician or would be magician has his bag of tricks, and most will have a portion of their repertoire that includes cool magic tricks to wow the crowd. Most of them play on chemistry to pull off but a great deal just depend of the sleight of hand ability of the magician, timing, and the gullibility of the crowd. Magic will always be a part of our lives, because it brings out the child inside of us once again, even if just for a little while as we watch some cool magic tricks being performed----we know it's not for real, but we love it just the same.
