How To Get Free Cell Phones For Low Income Families

By Charlie Zelan

With many families living in near poverty, paying for a cell phone plan may be the last thing on their minds. This situation has caused the rise of free cell phones for low income families.

The use of cell phones have become all too common these days. Practically everyone has a cell phone. They can be particularly useful during times of emergency. But picking up your cell phone you can make a quick call for help in seconds.

To be considered for free cell phones for low income families, your family must be considered low income. For example, if you currently get food stamps or live in subsidized housing, then you should be able to get free cell phones as well.

Free cell phones for low income families come with a caveat. There is a set limit to the amount of minutes you can use each month. After you use up all those minutes then you cannot make calls until you buy more minutes.

Also, you have to show that you are eligible for free cell phones every year. Once you are not considered low income, then you cannot use those phones for free.

To get free cell phones, you have to find a cell phone provider that has this program. Many states may not have this program yet since it is fairly new.

Fill out the necessary applications for a free cell phone. You will need to provide pay stubs and W2s to show that you qualify as low income. You have to show this information each year before you sign their contract.

Be sure you keep track of your minutes used every month. You do not want to run out of minutes when you really need it most. Check the amount of minutes you have used frequently each month. You can even make a schedule detailing how many minutes you can use each week.
