By Albert Phang

For those who have a creative brain, event photography is a profitable occupation. An event photographer is remunerated handsomely for his talent in clicking photos of different events, such as weddings, business events, and sports events. People want to cherish such events and look back at them fondly through the pictures, which is why event photography is so important.

Any properly trained photographer can indulge in event photography and be good at it. However, to become an expert there are some tips that must be kept in mind.

The first point to be considered is the event you are photographing and the final use of the pictures. For instance, while photographing a corporate event, whose pictures would most probably be included in an in-house newsletter, you must try to capture the exact order of the happenings in the event and show how the event unfolded in a clear manner through your pictures. On the other hand, if you are photographing a personal party, then it would be more prudent to focus on the people, particularly their faces.

Alertness is an important factor in event photography. You ought to be fully aware of what is going on around you and must be able to decide when to take a photograph. Employers are also favourable towards hiring photographers who comprehend what is happening around them and do not have to be constantly instructed as to when to click a picture. This is a skill which you will learn with experience but you need to make a constant effort on your part.

Understanding the site of the event and its layout will assist you in capturing the event effectively. You must be aware of the spots where the most important parts of the event are going to take place and the perfect spots that would allow you to click good photos of the event.

In terms of technical aspects, always ensure that you are familiar with your camera and all its features, so that you can quickly click photos from hard angles and not miss key moments. A crucial aspect of photography is lighting, and any proficient event photographer should pay extra attention to it by assessing in advance how much light the venue will be able to provide. Based on this understanding, you must come with the appropriate accessories and with your camera in the right mode.

Finally, an event photographer must also have a friendly personality. You must be friendly with the people you have to photograph. Once you become friends with the subjects and correctly sense the spirit of the event, the photos are going to be more natural.
