Event Photography - 101 Tips

By Michael Brown

Event photography as a job is very rewarding. People who cover events like weddings, seminars, sports events, award functions etc. are known as event photographers.

People usually believe that all you need to do to become an event photographer is to bring the equipment and keep taking photographs through the event. But, the truth is actually the opposite. To become a professional event photographer one needs to develop certain skills demanded by the discipline, which can be obtained and enhanced by taking up specialised courses on the subject.

From the outside you may believe that as the photographer runs around just clicking that there is no process in their photography. At an event there is an aim in place that must be met. Getting a large extended run of great high quality photos needs skill and an extraordinary eye. Being quick off the mark is a must to snap all those unexpected shots.

The first skill that an event photographer should have is imagination and it should be coupled with the capability to understand the theme of an event. As an example, the method for wedding photography has to be very different from corporate photography. Thus, the photographer must possess the quality of creatively shooting the mood of an occasion through his images.

Since you are handling live events, you also need to possess management capabilities. A bumbling and shoddy approach doesn't quite work in event photography. It requires that the photographer be ready with his camera and other essential equipment well before the beginning of the event. A habit of lazing around or doing things in a hurry will not help you a lot in this profession.

It is obvious that an event photographer must know his art inside out. He must know his equipment inside out and must have a good idea about how to manipulate the settings to get a top class result. He requires to know about the appropriate use of illumination and angles and he should be able to make use of the available resources to the maximum.

In summary, event photography requires a full time professional who is ready to learn all the varied facets of this discipline. To do well in this field, you need to be aware of and responsive to different situations that may present themselves.
